Olshan and Fernandez Win Legends 5K

The ninth annual Legends Run, run at Sunset Park for the first time, brought out a large contingent of younger runners to help celebrate the induction of Josh Sillitoe and Kelly Fernandez into the Southern Nevada High School Cross Country Hall of Fame. Josh, who graduated from Basic H.S. in June, chose not to race, using the event as an occasion for an easy workout, but Kelly, who graduated from Silverado this June, would have none of that and won the women's Open Division by over a minute in an impressive time of 20:08.

All in all there were 77 finishers in the 5K, which was run over rugged cross country-style terrain. The course, which started and finished on the grass in the middle of the park included a one-mile loop, run twice, though the desert at the extreme south end of the park. The hot, muggy conditions also contributed to the relatively slow times, as compared to a road race run on a cool day. 

The top three woman finishers and four of the top five were all Legends. Rhonda Kilfoyle, who placed second (21:13), and Amanda Gramly, who was third (22:22), both graduated from Clark H.S. and were both inducted into the Hall of Fame as Legends the year they graduated, Rhonda in 1998 and Amanda in 2004. Rhonda, who now runs representing the Las Vegas Track Club, recently ran the Boston Marathon and qualified for the 2006 event as a result of her outstanding finishing time. Amanda runs cross country and track for the University of Nevada, Reno, and will begin her sophomore year at UNR this fall. The fifth woman overall, and winner of the 35-39 age group, was Jamie Creedon now living in Flagstaff, Arizona, who came back to Las Vegas for this year's Legend Run. Jamie, also a Clark H.S. graduate, earned her Legend status by winning the 1983 State Meet. Other impressive performances among the women were posted by Lori Linville-Petrik and Danielle Bussell. Lori, who is the women's cross country coach at Laughlin H.S., was the fourth woman finisher overall and winner of her 40-44 age group in an impressive time of 22:49. Danielle, who runs for Vo Tech H.S., was the winner of the 15-19 age group in a time of 23:46.

On the men's side, the overall winner was 42-year-old David Olshan, who posted an impressive time of 17:36 and beat a number of outstanding high school runners and recent graduates in doing so. Josh Van Steenis (17:59) and Nick Schenk (18:14), who finished second and third overall, both ran for Silverado H.S. this past fall and both finished in the top 15 at the 2004 Nevada State Cross Country Championships.

In addition to Josh Sillitoe there were a number of other Legends who were present and ran in the men's race. Brent Bowers, who graduated from Rancho H.S. in 1980, was the winner of the 1978 Nevada State Meet, a meet run at Sunset Park. Brent showed he could still compete by finishing second in the 40-44 age group (behind David Olshan, the overall winner) in a time of 22:54. Also finishing second in his age group was Adam Chan who earned his Legend status running for Eldorado H.S. Adam, who graduated from Eldorado in 1990, posted a time today of 20:49 and placed second behind Ian Torrence (18:42) in the 30-34 age group. The other Legend present was Patrick Swick, a 2004 graduate of Chaparral H.S. and winner of the 2002 Cross Country State Meet. Patrick, who now runs cross country and track for the University of Oregon, used the run today as an easy workout, choosing not to race.

Coronado High School's Tucker Stokes and Laughlin's Scott Eubanks were among those who also posted impressive performances today. They went 1-2 in the 15-19 age group in the identical time of 18:25. Paul Zwintcher, who coached both Rhonda and Amanda as the head cross country coach at Clark H.S. and who now teaches and coaches overseas, won his 55-59 age group in 22:59. And Mark Wynne, whose daughter Tammy ran for and graduated from Sierra Vista H.S. in 2005 (and was a 2005 Hall of Fame nominee this past year), won his 60-64 age group in 23:19.

The Las Vegas Track Club sponsored the race and all entry fees went into the Club's Scholarship Fund, which supports graduating high school seniors who are LVTC members.
